Dominated by the Norman castle which occupies a commanding position high above the River Swale, Richmond has an iconic cobbled market square surrounded by Georgian buildings. Independent shops and great places to eat and drink make this an ideal choice for a day of culture. An English Heritage site, Richmond Castle offers breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Dales; there’s tamed beauty to enjoy on your doorstep in the form of the Friary Gardens, which contain the town’s war memorial and a 15th-century bell tower.
