A dead rodent and cockroaches, but a beautiful location!
I booked this house almost a year ago to celebrate my parents' 50th wedding anniversary. First, the good stuff: The location is beautiful. Our kids loved the sandy beach, and when there are waves you can swim because there are no jellyfish. When it's calm, beware! We had many jellyfish stings the first day. There's a nice firepit on the beach and kayaks and bikes to use. Now, the house itself: we arrived at 4 pm for check-in and found that the house was not ready. We agreed to hang out for another 20-30 minutes on the porch. With children ages 4 and 2, this was not ideal after a long car ride. When we were given the go-ahead, we went inside and immediately noticed that the place was just filthy. There were layers of dirt, dust and dead bugs all over the surfaces of tables, the fireplace, the windowsills, etc. The floors had sticky stains that looked like they hadn't been mopped in months. The living room furniture was covered in large stains and had visible food remnants on it. There were dead bugs smashed all over the walls. The kitchen was worse. Remnants of someone's old mixed drink was in the blender, many of the cupboards and cabinets were either broken or filled with random trash, but worst of all, when I opened the pantry door I smelled something awful. I found an open cooking oil container with a dead, rotting mouse floating inside. A large hole in the back of the pantry went to the garage. I immediately called the property manager and told her this house was unacceptable. She brought her son back to take the mouse out of the house and had another cleaner come for an hour to disinfect the kitchen. In many of the kitchen cabinets and throughout the pots/pans/dishes we found mouse droppings. We assumed at that point that the rest of the house had been cleaned. It had not. In the bathrooms we found used condoms in the wastebaskets, poop/blood/urine stains on the toilets, live and dead cockroaches, and mounds of hair from previous stays. I called VRBO to request a new house, but they said they couldn't move us. So, the next day, we bought our own cleaning supplies and spent 4 hours cleaning the house from top to bottom so it would be acceptable and safe enough to stay in. Scotland Yards sent their manager from D.C. to speak to me, and they ended up refunding half of our stay plus cleaning fees, which was appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay after we cleaned the house. We will consider this location again, but not this house.
