From the moment we arrived, the property was clearly unsuitable. The apartment is located down two extremely steep hills, which was nearly impossible and unsafe to navigate while carrying luggage on snow and ice. The unit itself is a poorly converted basement apartment with an overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke. The odor was embedded in the furniture, curtains, mattresses, pillows, and bedding.Sleeping was extremely uncomfortable. There are open “ventilation” holes directly above the beds, and with outside temperatures around -15C, freezing air blew straight onto our faces all night. Although heaters were provided, they did nothing to block the constant cold drafts. This conversion appears to have been done cheaply to maximize profit, with little concern for comfort or safety. The smoke detector had been removed and the batteries taken out, creating a serious safety risk.The refrigerator contained expired milk and leftover food, and we were provided with only one-third of a roll of toilet paper. We stayed one night only because we arrived after 10 p.m. and had no other option. The following morning, the management company offered no solution and refused a refund, instead suggesting a cleaning crew and telling us to open all windows to air out the smoke. Stayz was also unable to assist, stating they had no authority to issue a refund.
