When I was informed that the hotel we had reservations for would not be available (with only minor reported damage) nine months after Hurricane Irma and Maria hit, I was frantic and booked here. So I was concerned about the true condition of the property (and the island) and the representations if the old hotel wasn't even available. In addition, the lack of any visitor comments about any place made me feel that everyone else knew something that I did not know. I spoke with Sam and JC, (the managers), and had my concerns addressed, and I must say, was I ever wrong to ever be concerned!
This place is fantastic. You see no material issues with the hurricane, there are not piles of litter or otherwise issues. It's almost as if the hurricane never hit this property or the immediate area. The property is gorgeous, and the views shown are the true views. The place has high ceilings that give it an airy feeling.
The managers are super and always available. The description was accurate, and if anything, underplays the villa. The kitchen is fully equipped and furnished with everything that you need. The layout maximizes the view.
The roads are regular BVI roads, it is only the last 1/4 mile that is unpaved (was before, still is). When you come in, they will bring you in on the upper road. We used the lower road to get in and out afterwards as it was not as steep, but a little bit bumpier. The upper road is shown to you because the lower road could be muddy if you have a major rainstorm. 4WD is not required but helps.
We purchased groceries at Bobby's Market in Road Town and they have a super selection, just like a major grocery store in the USA. RiteWay is also a great choice. Go to the main stores in Road Town vs. the small local market for a better selection.
There is a backup generator that was used once when a power line blew a fuse. It started by itself and was very quiet, not what I was expecting. We were not inconvenienced in the slightest. (I know now that I should have phoned the manager as soon as it occurred!)
Considering this area was hit with 230+ MPH winds, it has recovered well after 9 months. The greenery is all coming back, and the citizens have really pulled themselves up by the bootstraps. Of course it has a ways to go (come on, its only been 9 months!), but I highly recommend coming to Tortola and the BVI, and especially Flamingo Sunset. There is no reason to delay, the island has and will rebound.
