Enjoyed time with my family at this adorable beach cottage. Peaceful and relaxing, you can hear the waves as you sip your morning coffee, or winding down at the end of the day. Perfect location. Tucked away from the street, very quiet.
Incredible location and view. Pre trip communication was very good and the app is handy. Listing is not quite accurate- beds are 1 king room, 1 room with a double and single and 1 room with a double bottom, single top bunkbed. Kitchen was not fully equipped for those that like to cook. Only 1 dinky sheet pan and no baking dishes other than some dirty disposable aluminum ones. There is a keurig but no regular coffee pot. There is a carafe for a Mr. Coffee but no machine. House was clean in primary pathways but side of bed, behind doors eta was dusty, sandy.House def feels smaller than pictures but worked well for two couples
overall. Just needs a little tlc cause the view is top notch! Also, on the day we checked in the heat was on pretty high so the house was hot. It was warm out so we turned AC on but it didnât seem to work. We messaged the property company about that and the coffee pot but did not get a response ever. It cooled off after our first night so AC wasnât needed but definitely needs to be checked.
It was a reasonably-sized, unpretentious, quirky house that had exactly what we needed. Ocean front, porch on ocean side, clean, and equipped as described. We wish there had been a coffee maker rather than just a Keurig. Just FYI for 5 adult coffee lovers
Great location on the beach in Oak Island. Older beach house and as such was on the small side (<1000 square feet?) for four adults. Showing some wear (broken dresser, lamps, floors, rusty grill) but still comfortable. No drip coffee maker (was listed). Keurig machine but no pods supplied. Our dog Scout was happy with the accommodations.
We stayed at Mellow Mermaid and although the view and location to beach was acceptable, there was a number of unsatisfactory things. First, the a/c wasn't working properly and we had two large portable a/c's taking up the main living area. When the repair men came, we did not have an exact time when they would arrive and how long they would take. Luckily we were there so they could get extension chord power from inside the unit but with two teenagers around and the door slightly open for the power, we were stuck at the unit for several hours of prime beach time. Second, there was a crack and chip in the kitchen table which was sharp and kept chipping putting glass pieces on the floor and table. This was a hazard and not sure why there were metal chairs with a glass table as this is just asking for it to break. Third, all the water faucets seem loose and felt like they were going to break off. Fourth, the TV in one of the bedrooms where the kids were had know real reception. There was a hanger stuck in the back as an antenna. We could not plug devices into and it really was a damper as the kids could not have there own space to watch what they wanted. Finally, the last night and morning we were leaving there was a maggot outbreak. They were all over the kitchen floor and it wasn't because of food out. Something must have died in the house as they were everywhere and we had to constantly vacuum them up. Unsatisfied- John & Drenna Hannon.
We loved our stay at the Mellow Mermaid! The location is great and I loved how convenient and close it was to the beach and how direct our beach access was. The view from the b ack deck was amazing and we spent a lot of time out there. The house was clean and in great condition, given its age (there was one small issue with a sticking door due to humidity, but I think that's just how things go at the beach). The staff was very friendly and helpful when we contacted them and checking in and out was a breeze. We had more than enough linens and the rental company left us with essentials to get us through the first day or two, so there was no rushing to the store after our 9hr drive to the coast. There was also plenty of parking. Other reviews have talked about how small the house is. It is small, but it's not tiny by any means. We were a party of six adults staying there and after a week in the house together, we're all still friends. ;)
First, I would stay again & family members said they would stay again. Here are our thoughts on making the stay better:
1. Include in listing that one BR does not have a closet.
2. Update the furniture. The dresser in the BR without a closet had a drawer handle dangling and the wooden joints on that side of the drawer were pulled loose. The drawer was not useable and had to stay open in the foot traffic pattern.
3. Update the furniture. The Goodwill/SArmy furniture was a turnoff. Old, poorly working wooden drawers that swell in the rain are an aggravation. The glass outdoor table & chairs for dining are extremely uncomfortable and useless. Glass table has a large fracture on one corner. Remove the oversized rolling office chair wedged between the end of the table and wall. Two small loveseats are inadequate for seating and relaxing if more than 2 in the group. One member was 6 ft tall and had to sleep crossways in the bed.
4. Loose the fake flowers and nic nacs. Ex. Remove standing birdhouse in BR with no closet and add shelves/cubicles.
5. Check outlets and covers. Again, BR with no closer had a ahort in wall outlet causing lamp to flicker and making it a challenge to charge electronics.
6. Add tv channels available in primary BR tv to living area tv for a wider selection of channels.
7. Replace kitchen ware esp. frying pans. Teflon is gone on these just making food stick when trying to prepare a meal in the house. No containers for storage. Huge mix match of âthingsâ none.
Oceanfront cottage, which is great. Loved the porch facing the ocean and the outdoor shower. I was there with my adult daughter, and it was great for the two of us. However, the bathrooms were extremely small, and the living room was small as well. My husband is over 6 feet tall and if he had come with us, he would not have been able to lie down on either of the couches and he would've felt cramped in the bathrooms. The air conditioning failed so we had one evening where we were starting to get uncomfortable and then the next day cottage got to 83° before the repairman were able to get out to fix the air conditioner in the afternoon. Since we were only there for three nights, This was unfortunate. Overall, we liked the cottage. Just don't go there if you're looking for some thing fancy or if you have large or tall people in your party.
