As VRBO customers since 2006, this stay was by far the worst. Aesthetically, the VRBO listing made the new home very inviting. However, under the surface, it was filthy and the homeowner and rental agent were unresponsive/negligent. Since we arrived late we went to bed to settle in for rest. That’s when the problems started. It was a warm/humid evening and we tried to adjust the thermostat. That’s when we discovered the homeowner had remotely locked the thermostat to 72. The problem, the house remotely cooled and ‘heated’ the home to stay at 72; yes heat in the summer. Although we had a warm/restless night of sleep, we complied with the VRBO hosts welcome email which asks guests to not contact them in the evening unless it was an emergency. The next morning we notified the rental agent and homeowner. Their initial response was they would address it and sadly we never heard back from them until 24 hours later when we followed up on our request. During this time, we discovered the homes hot water didn’t work on the first floor, bathrooms were dirty and toilet bowls were filthy with pink Serratia marcesens bacteria, which takes days/weeks to set when toilets are not cleaned. In the end the homeowner and agent did nothing. There are hundreds of comparable homes in the area so be kind to yourself and pick anything else.
