This is the second time we have stayed at this bed and breakfast. It was just as fabulous as the first time. Our host, Leslie was so welcoming and helpful. She couldn't do enough for us and we felt like we were staying with a friend - completely at home. The room was really comfortable and the breakfasts were amazing - Leslie is such a good cook. The location is so scenic and peaceful and is the perfect location to access the numerous hikes available in the area. We will definitely be back.

This is a first class B&B. It is peaceful and well laid out. The breakfast is excellent and my only regret is that they don't do an evening meal as I am sure it would be very good.

Fantastic Stay

Lesley was a warm and friendly host who made us feel extremely welcome in her home! I would highly recommend staying here. The home made breakfast was cooked to perfection. She was extremely helpful and couldn’t do enough for us- booking us a table at a local restaurant and helping us plan our route up scafel. We had a very comfortable night stay and would definitely stay here again.

The nicest B&B I've ever been to.

I came here for for an overnight before going up Scafell Pike, following an 8 hour drive. Everything about the room was lovely, with a lot of thought put in plus home made treats! The bed was comfortable and the room, not just clean, but well decorated too. The cooked breakfast was delicious with eggs from the farm and more home made food. I can't fault the place. Fantastic and friendly. I've stayed in a lot of hotels and B&B's over the years, and this was the best one ever, in terms of care and attention to detail of the room.

In every respect this B + B is as good as it gets. If you're visiting the western lake district put it top of your list for a few nights stay.

I'll be back!

Quite frankly the most comfortable home away from home I have experienced in over 25 years of travelling the country on business. I was welcomed with a shot of peach schnapps and a home baked, gluten free (I'm coeliac) sweet treat, then looked after better than my Mum (I hope she doesn't read this), until I had to drive home. Betty's Cottage, the annexe, has its own kitchen, and milk and chilled water are left for visitors in the fridge, there was a home made chocolate to welcome me at bed time the first night and a sweet treat each evening. Be prepared to leave your diet in the car on arrival!

Lake District Old School & Betty's Cottage B & B

Lesley was a fantastic host; her breakfasts and packed lunches were very very tasty and well presented; ambiance was very nice; her two British short-hair cats and black lab were very fond of greeting us every time they saw us. Very pet friendly.

Perfect!

We were hosted by Mugsie, a friend of the lady who owns the B&B. She was the perfect host and made us feel really welcome and cooked a cracking breakfast. We were sad to leave! The B&B is well located for people wishing to climb Scafell via Wasdale - around 30 mins drive. We found the B&B very easy to get to via motorways and A-roads, and at the same time it feels like it's in the middle of nowhere, very relaxing and quiet. A special shout out to Bruce, the world's best dog!

I stayed at the Old School for four nights for a business trip and it couldn't have been better! Lesley went out of her way to ensure a great stay. Friendly hosts, fabulous location, a lovely room, and delicious homemade food. Will definitely be going back!

Beautiful location and picturesque views

Excellent service, out hosts were extremely friendly and accommodating. Numerous special touches and individual attention. Lovely peaceful location, but near enough to walks, views, friendly pubs and places on interest. We had an excellent time. The daily breakfast was extremely satisfying and options were varied and plentiful. We also participated in the packed lunch option when we wanted to venture further afield. However, there are also plenty of options to have a lunch en route. We celebrated my partner's birthday on this trip and our hosts Lesley and John helped us to celebrate with additional treats during our stay. We were very fortunate to stay in the cottage with breakfast service, however the house is beautiful. I was able to look at the house and see all of the rooms as we were there before other guests arrived and I can safely say that any room you stay in would be very comfortable. Bruce, the black lab is also a joy to meet throughout your stay. I would highly recommend the bed and breakfast. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed and we are very eager to return again soon. John and Lesley also provided excellent recommendations of places to visit and dine.

Great bed and breakfast

Lesley and John offer exceptional hospitable as well as help with where to dine and a superb breakfast! After a day's walking it's so nice to come 'home' to a home-made cake in your room which you can enjoy at your leisure with a cup of tea in your room.
