Wake to birdsong in a secluded clearing surrounded on all sides by native Hawaiian forest. Take your coffee out to the covered patio and watch the morning light move across the lawn. In the evening, have dinner outside and linger in the hot tub. On clear nights, enjoy world class star-gazing from the lawn or explore the night sky with the telescope.

Inside, the kitchen opens to the dining area and living room, so cooking can be part of the fun, too. There’s a big sectional for movie nights and a separate enclosed lanai with wicker chairs for a quiet hour with a book. One bedroom opens directly onto the lanai and also has a twin futon. We keep books and board games on hand, along with a Pack ’n Play and children’s dishes.

Spend a day at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, head into Hilo for the farmers market and Rainbow Falls, or stop in Pāhoa for dinner.

The final stretch of road is unpaved, and we highly recommend an SUV for a more comfortable drive. Once check-in opens, you can arrive on your own schedule and let yourself in with the lockbox.
