The cabin was in the perfect location to unwind. I enjoyed the solitude. I loved the way each room in the cabin had its on theme. Building a fire in the evenings made the cabin such a cozy place. I would love to visit again.

Cozy weekend getaway!

A great getaway!
If your looking to get away from city hustle and bustle this is the place for you! But a heads up for city folk, a good bit of the drive is winding country roads without road lines. Cabin is right next to the creek and there is a very nicely mowed walking path along the creek which made for wonderful easy morning walks. The fire pit and hot tub are fantastic! Only negatives were minor. The creek bank is a very steep drop so there's no safe way to get down to the water when the creek is running low(as it was during our stay). As mentioned in the description, The sugar house is very visible from the front pourch of the cabin. It can not be seen from the back deck/hot tub which is nice. This wasn't an issue for us but if you're looking for 100% seclusion this may not be the place for you. Lastly the back deck is in direct sun during the late morning and afternoon so gets quite warm and it is not well lit so we had to use a flashlight to grill after dark. Again we found these things to be minor and did not deter us from leaving a 5 star review!

A slice of heaven
This was our 2nd stay at the Cabin at Back Creek. We absolutely love the cabin and location. Pat & Valerie are down to earth people who truly love to share their cabin and the maple making process with others. Valerie has the cabin stocked in the kitchen very well. Cooking meals there was easy. There are places to take a drive to, like up through Blue Grass or over to Green Bank or Cass, WV. But most of all hanging out at the cabin away from the crazy day to day life is the best. Sit out at night on the side deck and catch the awesome views of the stars (we even counted over 30 satellites on one night). We plan to stay here again in the future. Highland County had so much beauty to take in.

Perfect place to unplug. The cabin was lovely and the property beautiful. Val and Pat gave us plenty of privacy. If you are looking for somewhere to hole up and enjoy nature for a few days, I couldn't offer a better place. 10/10. Highly recommend.

Quiet and relaxing
We spent the weekend of Highland County Maple Festival at the Cabin at Back Creek. It was away from the crowds of the festival but just a short 20 minute drive away from the center of the action. The cabin was relaxing, clean, comfortable, and tranquil. We had everything we needed and didn’t feel like we needed to go out for amenities or necessities. The instructions for check in and check out were clear and concise and very easy to follow. We will definitely recommend to others and we will return as well! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Peace, Tranquility, and awesome Hospitality
The stay was amazing. Not sure what else to say. Pat and Valerie have a beautiful cabin. Not much you need to do other than show up and relax. Learning about the process of making maple syrup was great. Their maple syrups were tasty. Monterey was a beautiful, rural town. Breakfast at Claire’s cakes in town was great and the Mennonite’s bakery (Jackson River Bakery and Deli) was a treat… you won’t get better doughnuts or hand pies (or any other treats). The creek running along the property, the star gazing in the hot tub, sitting on the porch just taking it in, and everything else made this a memorable experience. We are already planning our next trip.

We loved staying at this cabin, and we loved the remote location. Very quiet. It was very comfortable, the beds and other furniture are in excellent condition, and we slept well. The owners have a sugar shack next door, but they mind their business, and it was fun to visit the sugar shack. Pat and Valerie are very down to earth people, and you can buy maple syrup and other items from their shop. When I head down to this area again, this will be our first choice to stay. PS, be sure to visit Jackson River Bakery and Deli, they have the best sandwiches and some groceries, and are only a couple of miles from the cabin. I wish I would have stopped in on day one.

Property owners woh operated a small business adjacent to the cabin were were helpful and friendly . Cabin was pleasant , abundant deer, nice fire pit along the creek and plenty of firewood on site. The spa was terrific. You are pretty remote so stock up on provisions before setting up there . Nice place

Such a beautiful cottage and location right on a quiet little creek! Lovely getaway. It was everything we hoped for and more! The well-stocked kitchen was great the wood-burning stove in the living room made everything so cozy in the fire pit outside along with the hot tub… It was just wonderful! This cabin was perfect for a quiet get away! It was clean, plenty of amenities and extra necessities
We enjoyed the hot tub, fire pit, being able to grill and just enjoy nature! We live a hectic Medic and “Beach Life” so this was the complete opposite from what we’re used to and exactly what new needed…just wish we could have stayed a little longer but, duty calls. We hope to be back soon!

Great property and great owners
Stayed here on our annual MC trip with a friend. This property was awesome. Located on quiet road with a stream, fire pit, hot tub and meadow with lots of deer. Great place to relax after a long day of riding. Very clean property and well maintained. We got lucky enough to meet the owners....highly recomend going to the building they sell maple syrup at. We got the Bourbon syrup which was top notch (and I am a food snop). One note for travelers......as mentioned the cabin is very private (in a really good way)....it is also a good 20 - 30 minutes away from any supplies (food, beverage of choice, etc). Make sure you take that into account if you are showing up later in the day.

Remote Cabin stay
Cozy cabin stay with plenty of open space for my two dogs to play fetch. Back Creek farm sugar shack is next to the cabin but no traffic over the July 4th weekend and the owners do not live on the property. We had everything we needed at the cabin. Had the pleasure of touring the sugar shack from the owner despite a short notice on a Holiday. We got a taste of variety of maple syrup flavors and purchased a few. Overall, highly recommended if you are looking to get away from a busy city lifestyle. We also hiked a few beautiful trails nearby. The owners were responsive to our questions via VRBO messaging prior to our stay and unmatched hospitality will make your stay worthwhile.

The cabin was beautiful and our hosts supper nice! The little store is filled with treasures that I hope to see the next time we stay. Our weekend was a reset for my husband and I. We loved having coffee in the mornings listening to the creek and the birds. We relaxed in the hot tub at night under the stars, just amazed at God’s beauty. We loved our stay so much, my husband surprised me with another weekend at the cabin for our 40th wedding anniversary. I can’t wait to celebrate in this beautiful, peaceful cabin on the creek.

Christmas Stay at Upper Back creek.

This place is absolutely amazing and even that word falls short. It is such a sweet cabin, its cozy and just homey. The solitude and peace that we had was just what we needed. Pat and Valerie are so sweet, and hospitable, and they have a cute sugar shack. If you stay you must try their maple syrup, maple candies and their maple fudge. The scenery was breathtaking during the day and at night. We were never short of something to do. If you have a vacation planned this is the cabin to go to.

We are sorry that our cabin did not meet your expectations. The hot tub was “tampered with “ by guests last April. We ordered a new hot tub immediately, however, it is not expected to arrive until January 2022! To clarify, the hot tub IS HOT, however, the controls for the jets and light no longer function. The jets do work when the hot tub is reheating (at least twice a day). Most of our guests have been quite understanding of our predicament.

I was surprised how remote this was. I love to be in the woods but to get to this one you go past Richmond, through a tiny town, keep going for another 45 minutes, go through a national forest and out the other side, through some 15 MPH hair pin turns for a while, through a tinier town... I wouldn't suggest being this remote for anyone with any medical conditions etc. In any case, not much in the way of hiking on the property. Maye not the best for kids as owner does not want kids in the hot tub without an adult in there too and there are so many books, breakables, and things hanging the kids may want to touch. Owners were kind and helpful.

Hi Amanda, I am sorry that you were uncomfortable with our location, most people come here because it IS remote! We recommend that all of our guests consult Google Maps - Highland County is a very unique area, and does not have all the amenities of an urban area. That's why we love it here! As for an adult being present in the hot tub with children (and we have had plenty of children stay at the Cabin!), that is for their own safety.

Take a Time Out from the world OR go explore amazing day trips.
You can opt to stay close to the cabin - venture into Monterey for cider at Big Fish Cider and perhaps grab a bite at the Curly Maple or High's Diner - check out the Highland Center Visitor's Center for info on hiking trails and events including music and weekly Farmer's Market on Friday afternoons. OR you can rest up and head out on an adventure for the day - we did the Jackson River Rain Trail near Covington and were impressed by Allegheny Outdoors/ Outfitters located at the end of the trail. Rent kayaks, tubes or canoes w/ a shuttle option and spend your post trail hike/ ride soaking in the gorgeous river. You will be even more grateful for your return to the restful vibes of Back Creek Cabin :)

Relaxing, friendly and very well equipped cabin retreat
Beautiful setting in forest along small stream. Deer grazing in site every day. Best equipped rental we have seen. Friendly, accommodating owners close by with stories of the maple syrup cottage industry. Very child and dog friendly. Great place to kick back and enjoy the forest. Twenty minute drive to Monterey and a few small shops and restaurants. Highly recommend.
