Dominica

Two Red-necked Amazon parrots got all up in each others' business while feeding in their favorite trees. These parrots are endemic to Dominica, so you won't find them anywhere else. The best way to see them is to hire local birding expert Dr Birdy (Bertrand Jno Baptiste). He knows the best places to find the island's birds, all the way down to the individual branches that Blue-headed Hummingbird like to land on.

We stopped at this house on a day tour of Dominica to look for the hummingbirds that often feed on the garden flowers. It always pays to hire locals when birding in a new destination, and for us that meant Dr. Birdy - a local birding expert that also works for the Forestry Division.

I believe that this is an Antillean Crested Hummingbird.
A Red-necked Amazon parrot feeding on his favorite seeds while hanging upside down. These guys are pretty agile and contort their bodies to pick individual seeds out of the fruit, much like the seeds of a pomegranate.

If like birds and you're in Dominica, you must hire Dr Birdy (Bertrand Jno Baptiste) to give you a tour. He describes himself as "greedy for birds", and it shows with all the enthusiasm he puts into it. Dr Birdy works for the Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division, and he knows exactly where to find every species on the island. He'll even stop the car and point out a branch and say "wait one minute, and a Blue-headed Hummingbird will land right there." And he'll be right.
