Bét Giyorgis

The medieval rock hewn churches of Lalibela are a world wonder by any definition. Carved out of the surrounding bedrock in the 12th & 13th centuries, the churches were intended to be a "New Jerusalem", an African Jerusalem. The greatest of these churches is the iconic Bete Giyorgis.

Today the 11 churches are part open air museum and part active pilgrimage destination for Ethiopians. The combination of the two help to firmly secure its place among greatest historic sites I have visited.

I arrived to Lalibela, Ethiopia, during the Timkat celebration, a few days ago.
I knew that I have to reach Bete Giyorgis early in the morning, in order to take good pictures of the amazing rock-hewn monolithic church.
