Our stay was extremely disappointing from the moment we arrived. As soon as we opened the front door, we were hit with a strong sewer odor.Before we could even read the host’s instructions, the toilet began to “burp,” causing water to splash out of the bowl. We later discovered the welcome information explained this was a known issue caused by a slow septic drain that occurs when it rains or when water is used elsewhere on the property. The worst part was that it also happened while someone was using the toilet, splashing water onto them while releasing an even stronger sewer odor. This was unsanitary and unacceptable.The property was also dirty. We purchased our own cleaning supplies, the extra sheets that were wrapped for use were wet, and even several coffee mugs were cracked. The front and side windows either had no curtains or only sheer curtains, providing very little privacy.I immediately looked for another place to stay but was not allowed to cancel. The host offered to send a plumber and provided air fresheners, but I wasn’t confident a plumber could permanently resolve what appeared to be a known, ongoing septic issue, and air fresheners did nothing to address the source of the odor.Had these issues been disclosed before booking, we would have stayed elsewhere.
