Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

The Chesser family settled on 592 acres here in the swamp in the 1860’s. Three generations of the family would live here. They were self sufficient living off what they raised or hunted. This house is the final one built by the family and was completed in 1927. It is now a stop on the Swamp Island Road tour and gives a look back at what life was like before electricity, central air and running water.

Slash pines, ponds and blue skies along the parks scenic Swamp Island Drive.
This would be the only alligator we would see today in this beautiful wildlife refuge.
You don't have to paddle far into the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge to find yourself far away from other people. Because of heat and bugs, summer is probably not the best time to visit, but the other three seasons are fine. Winter can be cool, but you'll find deep blue skies and water.
