The property has aged wonderfully and takes you back to old time Whitby. The stay at the royal hotel is unique in and of itself. The views it offers are outstanding; of the sea and the abbey atop the hill.

Once a grand hotel but sadly run down. Tiny room with flaking paint and old cheap furniture. Any view was hidden behind scaffolding outside the window. Receptionist at check in did try to apologise for the builders etc and was friendly. Love the location high above Whitby harbour.

Loved staying here.The property is old as it was built in the 1870s and some people may say needs updating but our room was lovely overlooking the sea, beds comfotable with modern shower room with exra heater in room if you needed it. Staff are really friendly and helpful. Meals in dining area are lovely and had a good singer on saturday night in bar area.close to sea and only short walk to shops.

Could not fault the Hotel, the staff were very helpful couldn't do enough for you, nothing was too much trouble for them the breakfast was lovely and our view from the window was amazing looking out at sea. We're hoping to come back in the summer time 😉

Overall great stuff for the price. All about the view of the harbour, Abbey, town and beyond. Fabulous people and sea watching spot. Only thing is very cold in cold weather due to single pane windows. Memorable stay. View is 5 stars!

Hotel is situated in an ideal location to explore Whitby.
Wonderful views (if the room allows).
Staff are great very personable and helpful.
The hotel itself could do with a lot of TLC, the windows in my room looked as though they were ready to fall out, the frames were rotten.

Lovely spacious room, with huge windows to a stunning sea view. Dog friendly. Nice welcoming bar area and staff. Breakfast was ok, we dined out for dinner as we had heard the food at the hotel wasn’t very good, but so many more options on the doorstep. Overall a great place to stay.

The most obnoxious and rude staff in hospitality
We had our personal belongings removed from our room 2 nights into a three night stay and just to have the room key snatched from our hand and said don’t know where are things are. Simply told on our return to the hotel without any prior communication that our booking was finished and there were no rooms. Despite proving our reservation was for 3 nights not two as we had already paid. The reception staff were unreasonable and wouldn’t explain any reasoning with any sort of decorum or professionalism. Simply horribly and abruptly. When our Compaynt Managing Director called to resolve she simply refused him access to discuss with the shift manager and wouldn’t provide any justification or reason and simply left him on hold permanently. Really disgusting behavior, people like that do not deserve a job never mind working in a customer service role in hospitality. Please please do not stay at this hotel…..!!!!

Fine for the money
Staff were friendly, breakfast was fine, room had signs of damp on wall, bathroom window & blind

Hi Avril, Thanks for your feedback and very pleased the team looked after you well. The hotel does need updating in certain areas. We are just finishing the redecoration of the hotel corridors and will then review the bedrooms. We also hope to replace some of the windows. Regards Andrew
