Clean, modern hotel in walking distance of rail network and right in city centre. Excellent breakfast. Very comfy beds. . Negatives - no coffee in bar after 11 pm. No cocktails after 11pm. No plug socket near mirror in bedroom for using hairdryer. No cake/ snacks available in bar during the day. All negatives are only minor points though and so would definitely stay here again. Staff all very friendly .

Excellent location, friendly and efficient staff and stylish decor throughout. Rooms lacking a little attention to detail with confusing switches/control panels. Excellent super fast WiFi throughout the hotel, including the rooms. Would happily stay again.

Lovely, central hotel. Impressed by the really great decor and warm welcome. Fab spacious room too with the most enormous, comfy bed! Sadly all let down by terrible service at breakfast both mornings, they were obviously severely short-staffed. We waited over an hour to then be presented with a barely tepid Full English. Such shame as all the components were great! Our feedback was listened to, apologies made and our food was refunded however. Would definitely them another chance.

Watch out for the “classic” rooms - they’ve not been decorated since the nineties and not remotely in keeping with the aesthetic of the rest of the hotel. Other than the room, friendly staff and good location.

Reasonable value for money
Overall not too bad and value for money. They've gone for an 'Industrial chic" look for the rooms with unfinished plaster walls and exposed service pipework on the ceilings, etc. Room size was good but not a lot of light coming into our room (319). The bed was large but the mattress was far too soft and not supportive enough for us. The rugs in the room help to soften/warm the floor, but they weren't cleaned/vacuumed well, with plenty of hairs etc on/in them. The parking nearby was quite expensive, even with the hotel's 25% discount and the spaces in the car park were tight to say the least! Next time I would get the train. Noises: Bins outside our room so we could hear the bottles being emptied late in the evening (Friday) and some odd intermittent pipework and air conditioning noises within the room.

Good food but not much else
Restaurant and food was really lovely, but the check in process and room itself was below average. The decoration is nice in the lobby but in the rooms is a bit tacky unfortunately. We didn’t arrive until about 9pm as we were told it was 24hr check in and there was no one at the front desk when we first arrived so we weren’t sure if we were in the right place. Then once we go checked in eventually we were placed in accessible room (not upon our testers) which meant we had a wet room instead of a bathroom, no bedside table or chairs at the desk in the room. The bed was comfortable enough for a simple place to sleep and so did the purpose and the breakfast in the morning was so good it almost made up for the rest of the experience.

Grubby room, good location
I’ve no idea how the Alan can claim to be a 4* hotel. I was in a rush to get to a gig when I arrived so ordinarily might have asked to change rooms but my feeling was that this place just isn’t being looked after and all rooms are probably a similar standard. The Alan markets itself to as a quirky hip city hotel but is unloved and really quite soulless. Pros: Central location (but noisy at night), cool vibes in the lobby, large bedrooms, bathroom products smell amazing. Cons: The room was grubby. Mildew and black mold in the shower is unforgivable. Large stain on the carpet (my guess is vomit) barely attempted at cleaning off. Walls marked and splashed. Rug placed at the weirdest angle. Only one tea cup (in a double room booked for 2). No biscuits. Old school analogue TV. I’ve stayed in much better (not to mention cleaner) budget hotels. Last time I visited Manchester I stayed at the Whitworth Locke which is in a similar price range and similar location but is significantly nicer. I regret trying somewhere new and won’t be back.

Not that amazing
It wasn't that amazing. The reviews on here are amazing. But it was just fine, the rooms on 6th floor dont look like the ones in the photos, more just an okay 3 star hotel or premier inn. Yes it was good price, but don't expect a luxury experience.

My biggest problem with this place is that you need to have your room key card placed in a slot on the wall if you want power (lights, outlets etc). We had asked for two key cards and planned to leave one in the slot when out so our devices could charge, but housekeeping pulled the card out when they were in the room. In a world where devices are so commonplace, basically denying guests the freedom to charge them is very odd. The bed was comfortable, and the heating/air conditioning was easy to use and responsive. I, as someone with relatively limited mobility, found the steps into the property to be quite tall and a bit of a problem. It's close to a tram station which is handy, but I wouldn't stay here again. The quality of the room (stained carpet and walls, slightly grimy bath) and restriction on electricity just weren't worth the price.

Stay was fine, but not worth the money
Room was fine but not ready when we checked in, although this was after the time given. When we finally got in the room, no bed for our child despite the fact we booked a family room. More waiting. Breakfast was also a wait as they cook to order. Food was delicious but only one coffee given, asked for another which did not arrive. The stay was fine but not worth the money.

Definitely recommended
I stayed here for a night with my boyfriend for my birthday, we both enjoyed our stay found it very comfortable. The staff are helpful and accommodating and our room was brilliant, it was spotless and stylish, our bed was comfy and we slept very well. It’s also in the perfect area and everything is within a short walking distance. However there was a problem with the plug sockets not charging my phone (iPhone 15), saying the accessory was too powerful. The staff did come and do their best to help but they couldn’t do anything to fix the problem. But overall, I would stay here again and definitely recommend it.
