The Georgian Cottage Margate, a short walk to Old Town & Cliftonville

Welcome to our semi-detached Grade II listed Georgian cottage in Margate Central, with three generously sized bedrooms. A beautiful 19th century house that has been lovingly renovated with an eye for mid-century design and modern technology.

10 minutes by foot to the Old Town, 12 minutes to Dreamland and fashionable Cliftonville and 17 minutes from the rail station.

Downstairs, our semi-open-plan layout flows between cooking, dining and relaxing, with a large dining reception with a table for six and a record turntable sound system (and vinyl LPs for your music pleasure).

The central hub of the house is a fully equipped modern kitchen with a breakfast table and coffee paraphernalia.

At the rear, a large patio captures the afternoon and evening sun for outdoor drinks and dinners or lounging, and a cosy TV room with ambient lighting is perfect for a night in of HD streaming or watching our collection of DVDs, Blu-Rays and Ultra 4K disc films.

Upstairs, sleep comfortably in our three generously sized bedrooms (king, double and twin).

We mainly live on a boat, but The Georgian Cottage is our first real home. We hope you’ll love it as we do.

Although we are new to hosting, we’re drawing on years of guesting and old jobs in hospitality to help guide us. We’ve worked hard to enhance our home for guests who have an eye for mid-century and modern design who are looking for comfort while enjoying what Margate has to offer—from a short walk to Dreamland to indulging in the local restaurant scene (Damo’s guide to Margate’s restaurants and bars will be provided!).

The detail:

The Cottage

The ground floor has been remodelled from a traditional layout to a fluid semi-open plan that flows between cooking, dining and relaxing, with a modern, generously equipped kitchen at the centre of the cottage.

Entering the cottage you are greeted by a large dining reception room for six, which also features a record player turntable and a small collection of vinyl LPs for guests to enjoy.

The bright and modern kitchen itself is packed with crockery, glassware, coffee apparatus and cooking equipment, and features a Formica breakfast table with Ercol chairs.

The northwest-facing patio garden is perfect for outdoor drinks, dinners and lounging in the afternoon and evening sun (enjoying Margate’s famous sunsets).

Up the turned stairs, you’ll find three ample sized double bedrooms with new floorboarding: a kingsize, a double and a twin; plus a beautiful new walk-in shower bathroom.

Smart features around the cottage include Bluetooth audio connectability with the dining room speakers, “Snug” TV and a portable garden speaker; and controllable lighting in The “Snug” and Bedroom 1 from IKEA’s new Matter Smart Home System.

Yoga teacher Catriona has provided a yoga mat in the cupboard under the stairs for any budding yogis, and there is a yoga wall chart in the front bedroom.

Kitchen

As The Georgian Cottage is also our home, we have equipped the kitchen fully for a range of cooking, plus a dishwasher with plenty of crockery and glasses to help you avoid old school washing-up!

Cooking—induction hob and fan oven, as standard, plus a large double-drawer air fryer and a microwave for convenience.

We love coffee, so expect several methods of preparation (Delonghi Nespresso pod espresso maker, a pour over drip kit, stovetop mocha/moka, cafetière and Aeropress).

Utility room

Off the kitchen at the rear of the cottage is a well-equipped utility and laundry room with a washer-dryer, outdoor/picnic paraphernalia and a spillover of kitchen equipment.

Equipment includes:

Ninja Foodi MAX Dual Zone Digital Air Fryer, 2 Drawers, 9.5L.
Hay PC USB-chargeable Portable Lamp (for use outdoor and around the cottage)
UE (Ultimate Ears) portable “Red Boom” speaker (for use outdoor and around the cottage).
Picnic bag with outdoor plates and utensils, and a cooler compartment.

We have also installed a “wall organiser” in the corridor off the kitchen, which gives guests a handy supply of whatever we thought might come up, including batteries, stationery, cables, chargers, and much more.

Bathroom

Our bathroom has a toilet and walk-in shower with a dual shower head system. It also has a handy wall charger for electric toothbrushes.

Guests are provided with Faith In Nature handsoap, body soap, shampoo and conditioner.

2nd toilet

There is a 2nd traditional “outside” toilet that is accessible from the garden patio, equipped with eco-hand sanitiser. Damo calls it the “W.C.” for “Wordle Closet”.

The “Snug” TV lounge

As you’ll spot from film art on the walls, we’re film buffs, so we have a great set-up to cosy in for an evening in our TV lounge at the rear of the cottage.

This includes Damo’s collection of DVDs, Blu-Rays and Ultra 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) discs, which we are currently cataloguing to make available to guests—right now, only a small selection of world cinema boxsets are available.

The “Snug” features a Samsung Serif 43” HD TV, designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroulle, connected to our high speed broadband for streaming, and a Panasonic DP-UB450EB 4K Blu-Ray DVD Player.

We have terrestrial streaming services, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video set up already for guests, and you’re welcome to sign up to your own streaming accounts during your stay.

Bluetooth screen sharing or playing music from a device through the TV is a piece of cake too. And have fun controlling the Snug’s ambient lighting with a smart IKEA Varmblixt donut wall lamp (remote control dimmable and colour spectrum lighting).

Garden/patio

At the rear of the property there is a large paved patio garden with a raised pebbled area that features two outdoor moulded lounge armchairs. We have six outdoor dining chairs.

Our summer dining table for six (by Hay) is currently stuck at customs and may arrive before your stay: we will add it to the listings as soon as it arrives in Margate.

Bedding

All our bedding is from M&S, as recommended for comfort and quality by Damo’s mum: Egyptian cotton sheets, and white pure cotton seersucker duvet and pillowcase sets.

Each guest has two interchangeable pillows each, one medium and one firm for personal preference.

All our duvets are M&S Luxury Down Alternative All Seasons 3-in-1s, with removable 4.5 tog and 9 tog layers, giving our guests three different tog options (both layers=13 tog).
