We stayed in several accommodations during our trip, and unfortunately, the Copthorne Hotel Auckland CBD was the worst by far. The receptionist was unwelcoming and dismissive upon check-in.
We booked a city view room based on the photos shown during booking and on the hotel’s website. Instead, we were given a very small room on Level 2 with two double beds, overlooking the car park. The so-called “view” consisted of a large tree and Anzac Avenue, with constant traffic from cars and buses—there was absolutely no city view.
The air conditioning was not functioning properly. It was extremely noisy and only blew warm air. Considering it was January (summer) and we were three people in a tiny room, the heat made it unbearable and resulted in a sleepless night. When we raised this issue with reception, the response was simply “no”—we were told we could not be moved to another room with a city view or working air conditioning.
Breakfast was equally disappointing. The hot food was covered with cheap plastic, and both the bacon and sausages had a strong, unpleasant smell that made them inedible. The quality felt extremely poor. When we asked for a hot chocolate for our child, we were told they only provide coffee and would need to charge extra for hot chocolate.
To make matters worse, we later realized we had paid $50 more than the hotel’s normal daily rate.
Overall, this was a very poor experience. We would not stay at this hotel again and would not recommend it to anyone.
